The risks of free Wi-Fi: How Michigan Secure can protect students from online threats

Schools and communities are facing unique challenges this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many districts and colleges are offering a mix of in-person and virtual classes, relying on available technology to facilitate digital learning opportunities.  Unfortunately, cybercriminals are exploiting this increased need for digital access by masquerading their own malicious hotspots as legitimate public Wi-Fi hubs. This can allow criminals to access personal and financial information stored on mobile devices and to monitor and track user activities.

The state of Michigan recognizes how important cybersecurity is for our schools, educators, students, and families. To help protect you, they have made available a mobile threat detection app that is free to all Michigan residents. The Michigan Secure app helps users find safe Wi-Fi hotspots and identify suspicious apps already on their devices. Once installed, Michigan Secure will also send alerts when unusual activity occurs on mobile devices by using threat intelligence to protect against dangerous cybercriminals – all while protecting your personal information.

While security is vitally important, privacy is a top priority for Michigan students and families. Michigan Secure does not require users to share personal information or mobile data. In fact, Michigan Secure does not collect, store, or monitor any personal information.

Michigan Secure is available for mobile devices running iOS 11 or higher, Android 6.0 or higher, and Chromebooks with Android Apps Support. You can download Michigan Secure on the App Store or Google Play. For more information, visit Michigan.gov/MichiganSecureApp.
